Dear Senator Cantwell and Senator Murray,

Please block Donald Trump and David Bernhardt from selling or degrading our public lands, and from degrading the environmental protections for those lands and the wildlife on them.I feel strongly about the preciousness of our public lands (National Parks, National Monuments, Wilderness areas, National Wildlife Refuges, National Marine Sanctuaries, National Historical Monuments and Sites, National Forests, BLM land, and others) and of the urgent need to protect them.

We in the United States have many blessings for which many people strived for and fought to attain: democracy, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, the right to assemble peaceably, the right to elect our representatives, the absence of war within America’s borders, the chance to pursue higher education, the opportunity to strive and prosper. Our national natural lands have—over time, and with our maturity and understanding—joined this group of blessings.

Much wildlife and habitat has disappeared since the days of our founding fathers, and modern Americans have come to realize what gems our conserved public lands are. Our public lands preserve wildlife, old-growth forests, mountains, seascapes, prairies, lakes, and rivers, as well as stories of our history and culture.

Conserved natural lands have become sacred trusts and are now part of our national being. They belong to me, my family, and friends, and to all Americans and our descendants, not to corporations or individuals.

Creating habitats and protections is hard; destroying them is easy. Donald Trump’s selfishness, shortsightedness, and maliciousness, enabled by the power of his office, threaten our environmental protections and threaten our wildlife and natural lands.

Oil and gas lobbyist David Bernhardt is a terrible choice to be Secretary of the Interior. I realize that you did not make that choice, but please use your offices during these next two years to block Bernhardt and Trump from selling, giving away, or degrading our natural lands.

I feel strongly about the preciousness of our national natural lands and the wildlife on them.

Thank you for your work,
Michael Maddox
